Technology sharing of TPE/TPR materials in various injection molding processes

Thermoplastic elastomers TPE and TPR have the elasticity similar to rubber and the thermoplasticity of plastics, and the hardness and physical properties can be adjusted by the compounding system so that they can be widely used and matched for special applications in many industries. Although TPE and TPR are thermoplastic materials, However, the special material properties of TPE and TPR determine that its molding methods are relatively limited:

1. At present, relatively mature molding processing methods:

Injection molding. Injection molding with an injection molding machine. It is divided into single material injection molding and double (multiple) material injection molding. Single-material injection molding. That is, the product only uses one material for injection molding. The specific injection molding temperature should vary greatly depending on the characteristics of different materials. Double (multiple) material injection molding. It can be divided into two types of plastic-encapsulated secondary injection molding (one-time injection plastic parts need to be taken out of the mold and then put into another set of molds for secondary molding of plastic-encapsulated TPE, TPR) and two-color (multi-color) injection molding. Two-color injection molding refers to plastic parts. No need to take it out from the mold, just rotate the die head, change another injection nozzle and inject again.

2. Extrusion molding. Plasticize with a screw, then open a suitable die, and use pressure to extrude into strips, sheets or special-shaped extruded products of the desired shape. Common TPE, TPR extrusion products such as furniture sealing strips, edge banding, automotive window sealing strips, door and window sealing strips, glass sealing strips and so on.

The above two types of molding methods: basically all TPE and TPR with hardness and physical properties are applicable.

2. Restrictive molding processing methods:

1. Laminating salivation (adhesive)

This kind of processing method is only available for TPE with a special compounding system. Such as some composite films, luggage linings and so on.

2. Blow molding

This type of molding method has very high requirements on the melt strength of TPE. At present, as far as most TPEs are concerned, blow molding is basically just a beautiful lie, which is very eye-catching, but basically has no mature applications.

3. Vinyl (rotomolding) molding

Imitate the PVC enamel process to form TPE and TPR. However, due to the rheology of TPE and TPR (the influence of temperature and pressure changes on the fluidity of the material) is quite different from that of PVC, TPE and TPR are still processed by enamel (rotomolding). Cannot function maturely.
